The Human Bit

Moonshot AI · Kimi K3 · 16 July 2026

Kimi K3 is available, but its open weights are not yet.

Kimi’s new flagship is live in its products and API, but the downloadable weights and fuller technical report are promised by 27 July 2026.

The Human Bit take

Add it to the Lab now and design matched long-horizon tests. Do not describe it as downloadable until the weights actually land on or after 27 July, and do not infer cheap from open.

Why this may matter

K3 could become an important open model for long-context coding and knowledge work. Today, however, it is a hosted service whose total reasoning cost, operational fit and promised weight release still need checking.

Keep human

Kimi warns that missing reasoning history can destabilise output and that K3 may make unexpected decisions when intent is ambiguous. Preserve the session and constrain its authority explicitly.

What changed

Moonshot released hosted access to a 2.8-trillion-parameter model with native understanding of images and video, a one-million-token context window, tool calling with dynamic tool loading, and reasoning effort selectable at low, high or max, across Kimi, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and its API.

Real example

A consultancy could give K3 a controlled pack of reports, spreadsheets and images and ask for an evidence-linked analysis plus an interactive dashboard, while a reviewer checks every claim, calculation and action.

Test status

No test is attached to this item. Its current evidence state should not be read as a Human Bit result.

Sources and review

Sources retain their own provenance. A provider announcement establishes what was announced; it does not become independent testing.

Canonical claim: Moonshot released hosted access to a 2.8-trillion-parameter model with native understanding of images and video, a one-million-token context window, tool calling with dynamic tool loading, and reasoning effort selectable at low, high or max, across Kimi, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and its API.

Readiness: Keep this visible without changing guidance until stronger evidence arrives.
